Why You Need to Take a Leap of Faith ~ and a Giveaway!

Sometimes, … no quite often, God asks us to do things that make us incredibly uncomfortable.  And like the shy kid who hates reading in front of the class, we have a choice to make.

Will we follow, take the leap of faith?

Or will we back away from the edge in fear and miss our chance to really soar?

The Father has been sending me quite the message about fear lately, and I know He’s sending some of you that same message, too.

Fear not.

It’s the same message from three years ago when I typed out my first public confession here in this space.  You see, I thought that blogging would be a less terrifying, safer way to obey the Lord in using this gift of writing for His glory.  I think about that now and just laugh because there is nothing less scary or safe about writing about the hard things in life.

There’s nothing safe about writing how you sometimes feel unloved, or you sometimes fail at loving others.  There’s nothing safe about writing out your own sin for the whole world to read.

Listen to me, friends, there’s nothing safe about sharing your story, whatever it might be, but there’s nothing quite as beautiful either because when you do, you get to hear “me, too” and “I needed that” and “thank you.”  You find out there are so many other work-in-progress women out there in the world who struggle through the same life lessons as you.

You learn that while you set out to encourage and exhort others through this thing called writing, your Father set out to encourage and exhort you.

But the most beautiful part?

You get to take part in God’s story.

That’s why you need a faith that leaps because when we obey, when we take that risk of being foolish for the sake of Christ, we join in the work of reaching others for His Name. And there is nothing more difficult yet infinitely more rewarding than that, is there?

When we reach the edge of the cliff the Lord leads us to, we have two choices: we can either back away in fear, or we can take a leap of faith. What leap is He asking you to take? Why You Need a Faith that Leaps

Is it worth it, this leap of faith?

Yes, a thousand times yes.

It’s worth it, friends.

That hard thing He wants you to do? That person you need to talk to? That story you need to share? That sin you need to confess? That future that He wants you to leap in to?

Take the leap, friend.

And I’m not talking about the feel-good, positive-vibes leap of faith in yourself. I’m not talking about the dream-your-own-dreams, you-can-do-it, make-your-own-destiny kind of leap.

I’m talking about the leap of faith that asks you to deny yourself and take up your cross. The leap of faith that scares the pants off of you because you’re fairly certain you are not capable on your own.  The leap of faith that is only possible because you serve the God of the impossible.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, andtake up his cross and follow Me.” Mt. 16:24 (NASB)

I’m talking about a leap of faith with its object and focus as the Creator of the Universe, the God who holds you in the palm of His hand, the One who will never leave you nor forsake, who plans to prosper you and not to harm you.

Take that leap of faith, friend.

To do otherwise is to willfully choose disobedience.

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Heb. 11:6 (NASB)

Choose faith and find yourself in awe of the Lord who works in and through you!

Being Steadfast ~ Grace and Truth Week 35

Being steadfast isn’t easy in an ever-changing world, one where we “debate” over dead baby parts and watch children lose their heads for the sake of Christ. A world where twin towers haunt our memories, teaching us that even in Amercia, we are not untouchable.

Our world is full of sin and evil, and not just the kind that lives halfway around the world, but the kind that touches you and me everyday.

I’m talking about the kind of evil that destroys countries and churches and marriages and children and people….so many people.

It’s enough to make a woman heart-weary and numb.

When we face such trying situations, whether personal or not, what will our response be?

Will we stand firm in the Lord?

Or will our feelings overrun us?

Ifeoma from Purposeful and Meaningful shared some lovely words and scriptures on this topic last week.  Be sure to stop by and be encouraged!

Don’t be moved, friends. Now more than ever, we need those beacons of light to pierce the  encroaching darkness. We need steadfast hands and steady hearts to bring a balm of comfort and peace to a broken and hope-hungry world.

Don’t be moved, my sisters in Christ.

Not now.

Jen :)

Share the Gospel ~ Grace and Truth Week 34

Every once in a while our eyes are opened in a powerful way to the lost of this world.

Maybe your eyes are opened through news of a tragic natural event taking the lives of many, or maybe it’s a single boy washed up on the shore of a distant land, lifeless.

They are all around us, you know, those who may not even know who Jesus is and those who do know of Him but remain separated from Him.

When did we forget the power of the gospel?

So often we wake up in the mornings, get busy with our days, work hard until evening, and fall into bed exhausted, never once thinking of those who are waiting for Good News and the freedom that follows. I know because many days that’s me – too caught up in this world to focus on that beyond.

As my husband and I work through the church-planting process, we’re realizing that we’ve lost sight of the importance of living life on purpose in some ways. We grew weary and settled for “good enough.”

That ought not be, friends, not when it comes to spreading the Gospel.

We cannot sit back and wait for the perfect opportunities, or for a miraculous sign from the Lord, or for encouragement from others, or for whatever “it” is that we’ve been waiting for. What kind of faith do we have if we are waiting for the perfect combination to guarantee our success?

I want a faith that is fierce, a faith that forges ahead even when discouragement strikes, a faith that leads to victory in His Name.

Who will choose boldness with me?

Let’s quit leaving the Gospel-sharing job to pastors and missionaries and husbands and all of the other someone elses in the world. Instead, let’s love others enough to put our own pride at risk and share a little truth with someone in need.

Maybe you’re thinking, but I’m not naturally an out-going person and I’m certainly no evangelist.  Here’s the thing, we’re all commanded to go and make disciples – not just those who are naturally out-going or who find it easy to share.  Hard truth? Yes, I know!

In fact, often throughout the Bible we’re commanded to sacrifice, to do things that lead us straight out of our comfort zones because we serve a big God and He wants us to learn to rely fully on Him.

So because I know how nerve-wracking it can be, I’d love to share with you a cool new tool I recently learned about. It’s called the Life Conversations Guide App (from the North American Mission Board) and is available for both android and apple devices. There is even a Spanish version!

It’s like a gospel tract right on your phone. You’ll always have it with you! Even more, the fact that it utilizes technology instantly generates more curiosity, especially among younger generations.

Once you’ve downloaded it, watch this brief video that explains a little of how to use it. :)

The best part is that once you download and use it yourself, you can also encourage those you share it with to download it themselves. Why? They can go over the talking points again on their own, and they can even watch a video version that explains the Gospel.

And here are 20 more ways to share the gospel, just in case.

Ok, now you and I both have no excuses!

On to the link-up…

Jen :)

When Life Gets Busy ~ Grace and Truth Week 33

I’m so happy it’s Friday already, friends! We’ve had one of those weeks when you just fall into bed exhausted every night. :)  Has it been unbelievably busy at your house lately, too?

Today we lay a friend to rest, and yesterday we visited a friend in in the hospital who is hopefully waiting for word on whether or not she qualifies for a heart transplant. And as I type these words, an MK acquaintance of mine sits in intensive care with her baby, waiting for healing to take place.

I know we hear it all of the time, but that doesn’t make it any less true: life is short.  We’re not even guaranteed another day with our loved ones.

So as you finish out this week and all of its busyness, don’t forget to take time for one another as a husband and wife, and as a family (yes, I’m telling myself this, too!).  Keeping those bonds strong is more important now than ever before!

This week’s featured post is from Gwen at An Island Family by Grace. Gwen shares about a difficult time in their marriage, as well as 7 strategies for coping.  I especially like suggestions #2 and #7!  Be sure to stop by and visit her this week. :)

Find more encouraging words in the link-up below!

Hold fast,

Jen :)

Practical Help for Christian Bloggers

As a Christian bloggers, we want to do our best to honor God and His Word in all that we write, say, and do. Yes?

Yet there is this tension in faith blogging between worrying about pleasing God rather than man and becoming a successful blogger.

If you are a Christian blogger, I’m sure you’ve felt it.

You don’t want to be a sell-out.

You’re not in it for the money but for the message.

Thus, your definition of “success” varies greatly from the typical blogger who is mostly concerned with building a blog that is successful according to the world’s means.

Are you a Christian Blogger who needs help growing your reach in a Christ-honoring manner? Look no further! Christian Bloggers Bootcamp offers practical strategies that are unique to the Christian blogging niche. Join now during open registration!

At the same, we cannot reach others with the message unless we learn how to make the best use of our blogs and social media outlets.

How can you best set your light on the lampstand so that it can shine before men without letting pride take over?

How can you use best blogging practices for His glory without becoming consumed by numbers and your own small fame?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Mt. 5:14-16 (NASB)

It’s not an easy balance to achieve, is it?

We want to do our best to get the message out there, yet we know that numbers and dollars are not our best measure of success, not as Christian Bloggers.

It reminds me of that whole be in the world but not of the world dynamic that applies to so much of Christian life.

Well, today I offer you some practical help and hope for achieving this balance, friends!  I know some of you are waiting anxiously for the re-opening of Christian Bloggers Bootcamp by missionary and author Arabah Joy because you’ve heard about it from other like-minded bloggers.

Why recommend this course above all others?

Because I know Arabah Joy personally.

She has become a mentor to me, not just in my writing, but also in my spiritual life. Her faith is real, folks, and that’s what I admire most about her.

Because I know her heart for God’s message and her desire to spread the influence of other Christian bloggers, I have learned that I can trust her advice!

“We live in a dark world. As a follower of Christ, I consider it not only a joy but a duty to invest in other Christian bloggers whose effectiveness would dramatically increase by learning the key things I have learned.”  ~ Arabah Joy

Working together with Arabah and a close group of other Christian bloggers has helped me to increase page views by 40 percent so far.

Thus far I have only implemented part of Arabah’s Pinterest strategy for Christian bloggers and some of her Facebook wisdom, and already I’m seeing significant growth, not only in pageviews, but also in followers on both platforms and this blog.

I’m excited to see the snowball effect that implementing just a few key strategies for Christian bloggers has already created, and I can’t begin to imagine what the full effect will be once I work through the modules.

Now I want to learn more! :)

UPDATE**  I have to tell you all that I failed to realize the value of this facebook group at first. Aside from the excellent content within the course itself, the Christian Bloggers Bootcamp facebook page is my favorite feature. I know anytime I have a question, whether practical or ethical in nature, I can come to this group of ladies and know that they are approaching blogging as a ministry in the same way I am. That means I can more readily trust their advice to lead me in ways that are God-honoring rather than self-promoting. Additionally, because of their faith, they are eager to share tried and true techniques and eager to help one another. This group alone makes the course worth the financial investment, in my opinion!

Simplifying Time With God ~ Grace and Truth Week 27

It’s Friday again already and time for the Grace and Truth Christian Living link-up!

We’ve been through a couple of tough weeks lately due to a situation at our church that resulted in my husband resigning as pastor. So while I have your attention for a minute, can I ask you to pray with us about our future?  Right now, my husband is jobless, but we are counting it joy that the Lord continues to be faithful in this difficult time!

Lately, I’ve been convicted of the need to draw even nearer to God, especially considering our current circumstances. In fact, considering all that is going on in our world right now, I believe all Christians need to draw ever nearer!  Let’s humble ourselves before the Lord and pray for our lost world!

If you find it difficult to make time to draw near to God, then you’ll appreciate this week’s featured post from Betsy at Faith Spilling Over.  Betsy shares a simple technique for focusing your quiet time on a single verse. Even though the technique is simple, I believe it can be powerful to affect change in our daily lives!

Be sure to read below to learn Betsy’s secret for effective quiet time even in times of busyness. :)

And while you’re at it, why not join Betsy on Facebook? :)

Thank you, Betsy, for sharing with us last week.

See you all in the link-up!

Jen :)

Jesus Wins ~ Grace and Truth Week 26

I come to you this week with a sad and weary heart, friends.

Why?

Because I am witnessing firsthand what happens within a local body of Christ when leaders begin to question the validity of God’s Word and assert society’s interpretation onto Holy Scripture.

There is a sense of loss, of betrayal, of disappointment and devastation that I cannot adequately convey to you.

And I share this with you not to stir up some former controversy or to rehash previously argued points. No, I think by now we all know where we stand as individuals.

I share this story here because the closeness of this particular disappointment made me realize how lonely recent events might make one feel. And I’ve learned over my lifetime that loneliness is one of the enemy’s greatest weapons when we allow it to be.

Many of you are finding yourselves in a similar unexpected minority amongst your friends who also claim Christ.

You may feel utterly alone and be tempted to acquiesce. You may even be falsely accused, your character maligned, your morals despised.

Your very Christianity called into question.

To you, my Bible-believing, Christ-following friends, I would say take heart!

You are certainly not alone in your view on the authority of God’s Holy Word. You are certainly not alone in your desire for truth-telling either. I hope to share more with you on that later this week. :)

That said, I appreciate this voice this week:

“When the leading pastors of the land begin distorting the truth and adjusting the principles to fit the current cultural trends the moral compass gives an uncertain reading.” ~ F. Dean Hackett

Uncertain – yes, these are uncertain times.

Yet this voice here, gives me hope for what is to come:

“If there is any good that could come from this Supreme Court decision, it would be that a clear and distinct call would go out to the body of Christ to repent.” ~ Rosilind Jukic

Let it be, Lord.

So carry these words from Jesus with you into the coming weeks:

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” Jn. 16:33

Because in the end,

Jesus wins.

Jen :)

A Little About Fambaca ~ Grace and Truth Week 22

Hello, reader and blogger friends! :)  It’s that time of week again when we come together as a community and encourage one another at the Grace and Truth Christian living link-up.

We have family in from out of state this week, so we are busy building memories and enjoying lots of quality time together.

We call it FAMBACA – it’s a long story really, but the short version is that once upon a time, someone who shall remain nameless tried to abbreviate Family (FAM) and Vacation (VACA) and misspelled it on facebook. We all had a good laugh and the “name” of our family vacation just kinda stuck. Even the littlest ones call it Fambaca now.

That’s one of the things that makes family enjoyable, though, isn’t it? Knowing the words and phrases that will make your sister snort pop out of her nose or annoy your sister-in-law (“ro-aaaaddd”). Sorry, Christa! ;)

When we make memories together, we weave connections that last a lifetime; thus the phrase “Remember when?”

I’m hoping to have more on that aspect of healthy families later this summer, but for now, we’re busy weaving.

Take time to enjoy your family this week!

Jen :)
