Beholding Christ ~ Grace and Truth

Lately I’ve been reading in Romans about how creation groans in anticipation of Christ’s second coming, how we who are in Christ also anticipate this glorious event also – the redemption of our earthly bodies.

It was the same for those who waited thousands of years ago for the Messiah. Little did they know he would arrive as a mere Babe.

Yet they waited then…and we wait now. We count down the days until Christmas, some of us for presents and celebrations, but for some of us so much more than that.  We wait for the day that we celebrate His birth, the arrival of a thousands year old Promise, the arrival of our Peace.

It’s as if the coming joy is nearly tangible in the air. Can you feel it? Or am I just crazy? :)

As we wait expectantly, Betsy reminds us to “behold Jesus,” to expect Him, to listen carefully for the Father’s voice.  Otherwise we might miss the message!  Stop by and read the rest of her story below.

Advent In N Out Burger

As you make your Christmas preparations in the coming weeks,

Leave room for Christ.

Jen :)

Grace and Truth Week 45

Hello, faithful readers! Did you all find some encouragement in the link-up last week?

Apparently the Lord had a special lesson for me since everywhere I went, I received something similar.  I’m not surprised because I’ve been feeling just a little bit whiny and discontent on the inside lately. Yes, I knew my attitude was wrong, but I felt somewhat justified, I guess.

Well, no more!

I’m hearing clearly that I should do everything as unto the Lord, even this hard season that we’re in currently. And if I’m doing it for the Lord, I can’t exactly be whiny about it, now can I? :)

So, I hope you enjoy this post from Sarah over at The Life of This Mother. I normally don’t mind taking care of most of the household responsibilities, but in my recently whiny state of mind, I began to resent many of them. This was a good reminder for me of the importance of what goes on in the home!

And if that weren’t enough, read through Deb’s excellent post on Ed the HVAC Guy over at Faith’n’Friends – what a testimony! This man’s story certainly caused me to recognize my own selfishness.

All for the Lord,

Jen :)

When the Father Prunes~ Grace and Truth Week 44

I’m sure you’ve experienced it before, and perhaps you find yourself smack in the midst of it now – a season of pruning.

The purpose of pruning is to cut dead branches off or sometimes even to remove living ones in order to encourage more fruit-bearing in the following season.

And anyone who has been pruned before knows that the cutting off is painful, sometimes exceedingly painful, yet there is purpose in that pain, friends!

So when the pruning shears come out, perhaps we should willingly submit ourselves to the Master Gardener instead of trying to avoid His work at all costs.  How much easier would it go for us if we appreciated the pruning for what it is?

The pruning is a gift really, is it not? The chance to be more.

The pain of pruning is worth the final product!

Haley from the Long Way to Go shared a beautiful perspective on pruning with us in the link-up last week.

“God showed me that there is color in a season of pruning.”

Read the rest of this week’s feature by clicking the photo below!

Look for the product, friends.

Jen :)

Christians and Sin ~ Grace and Truth Week 43

It’s Friday, and I’m just thankful to have made it through this week with a smile still on my face (well, mostly, haha). You?

I’m thankful for the Lord’s goodness in giving me the energy I need to get through each day lately.  I’ve started asking Him ahead of time when I know our day is going to be particularly long or potentially stressful to give me His strength and peace and patience. He always does. :)

But some days I don’t choose the opportunity for demonstrating patience or joy or strength. Some days I fail.

Some days I willingly sin.

I read a meme earlier this week on facebook that said something along the lines of: The mark of Christians is that they keep on fighting against sin. It doesn’t matter how many times they fall as long as they get back up and resume the fight.

How true.  We cannot expect perfection on this side of Heaven, but neither should we give up!  We choose to persevere, having faith in the results to follow.

This week my friend Dawn shared an excellent post on the mistakes we make.  She wrote of how they can lead to shame, but also to redemption. That’s the amazing Grace we experience as children of God!

Friends, this is one of those posts that bring a smile to your face and gratefulness to your heart – and maybe even a loud, “Amen!” to your lips.  So be sure to stop by and be encouraged. It’s well worth the time!

As we finish off this week, let’s remember how great a God we serve.

We may feel weak, but He is strong.

We may feel inadequate, but He is sufficient.

We may be weary, but He promises rest.

Let’s do it all for His glory!

Jen :)

P.S. I think I have fixed my Grace and Truth buttons, so if you’ve had issues with them in the past, give them a try today and let me know if they work! Thanks!

Trusting His Character ~ Grace and Truth Week 42

Some of you are aware that my husband recently left a pastorate where we had served for 4 years, and it didn’t end well. It was one of the most difficult decisions of our married life, and a very unpopular decision in some ways,  yet since then I’ve rested in the peace of knowing we made the right decision.

When this first happened, God did some amazing things for us!He provided for us in inexplicable ways – as only God’s people can do as the body of Christ.

And when we made the leap to church-planting (who? us?!), we were filled with encouragement, excited, and rearing to go.

But then some disappointments came, and church-planting ended up being a lot more difficult than we imagined. We thought we had a solid plan for how this whole thing was going to work out, but as He so often does, God quickly showed us that our ways are not His ways.

Since then we’ve been in a season of waiting.

If you follow this blog or Being Confident of This’s facebook page, then you know that discouragement hounded us for a couple of weeks. We were no longer seeing quite as much physical evidence of God’s blessing or direction.

And like so many humans, we began to doubt.  An Israelite at heart, I began to complain to the Lord about our circumstances.  Daily bread wasn’t enough for me; I wanted more. Thus, a spirit of discontentment invaded my soul.

Wouldn’t you know that during this time, I ran across Christi’s post three separate times?! Three! And even after reading it several times, I found new things to like about it, not just because Christi’s an excellent writer, but because the message of her post is so very true.

We hear and read a lot these days about our BIG God who encourages big “dreams” because He’s the God of the impossible.

While all of those things are true about our God, He remains true to His character and His Word even in the times when dreams don’t come true, when He doesn’t show off.

Please take a few minutes to read Christi’s post. I know you won’t be disappointed!

And for those who might be curious, we’re coming out of our little cubby of discouragement and embracing the truth that God IS who He says He is. So, we press on knowing the path He has laid before us and trusting Him to guide us each step of the way.

We’d appreciate your prayers for Montpelier Bible Church!

Thank you, friends.

Jen :)

Beware the Influence ~ Grace and Truth Week 40

A few years back when our twins were little, my husband worked a second-shift job. So, I was often alone in the evenings, getting supper, helping with homework, and getting everyone safely tucked into bed.

Once the hard work was finished for the evening, I often sat in front of the tv to relax for a bit.  We are careful what we watch in our home due to the influence of the world in so much of our media, or so I thought, and we usually stuck to relatively “innocent” tv programs.

But one night, as I watched Everybody Loves Raymond, I recognized a not-so-innocent subtext that I had never noticed before. The subtext portrayed men as idiots that we just put up with because we can’t help but love them, and women as the superheros of the family unit.

The problem with that subtext is that it was in some ways, relatively subtle, and without realizing it, I had begun to believe it was true!  What a destructive thought pattern for women of faith who are to respect and love their husbands.

Believe it or not, I actually had to take an extended break from the show in order to get my heart towards my husband back to the right spot.

All too often, modern media influences our thinking without us even being aware. And before we know it, our attitudes are far from Christ-like, and much more world-like.

That’s why Kristin’s post from last week is so important.  Kristin writes at Biblical Wives Book Club, and while many bloggers write about the potential downfalls of television and movies with worldly themes, we sometimes forget about the influence that our beloved books can have on us, as well.

Stop by and read Kristin’s post because the implications reach much further than just romance novels and into every area of our lives!

Let’s throw off the influences that damage, and instead

think on the things that are noble.

Jen :)

First World Christians ~ Grace and Truth Week 38

Another week has gone by already, time slipping through our fingers without catching our notice.

What are we doing with our time?

And what are we doing with our privilege?

Kelsey from The Unabashed Life asks this question. Her thought-provoking post made me simultaneously thankful and ashamed: thankful for the gift of privilege and ashamed for not always being a good steward of that privilege.

Thank you, Kelsey, for the timely reminder that to whom much is given, much will be required.  May we seek His face even more diligently!

One of our greatest privileges is the knowledge of the gospel, friends. And lately my heart is so burdened for the lost and the wounded – those around the world who have never heard the name of Jesus and those right down my street who aren’t in relationship with Him either.

Let’s spread our treasure around, friends.  That’s what we’re meant to do with it, after all.

Let’s remember those brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering in ways we cannot even imagine, too.

Above all, let’s cling to Hope and quit striving in our own strength.

Because He’s worthy!

Jen :)
