Merry Christmas and My Final Grace and Truth

Merry Christmas, friends!

As I mentioned last week, this will be my final week as a co-host for Grace and Truth, but I encourage you to link up in the New Year with one of the other co-hosts.

I’ll still be here blogging away and joining with you all in the link-up!

Thank you for your faithfulness,

Jen :)

An Important Announcement ~ Grace and Truth

Hello, faithful readers and friends!  I realize that many of you are busy with holiday preparations this next week, but I wanted to take care of some important “business” with you all.

We will be hosting the Grace and Truth link-up next week even though it falls on a holiday (I’ll be scheduling mine ahead of time)!

Remember that the link-up is open all week long and  entries are shuffled randomly, so please don’t feel pressure to come and join us on Christmas day. However, we’d love to have you join in later in the week as you have time.

One other important note (in case some of you miss the Christmas link-up), after months of wrestling with the future of Being Confident of This and how Grace and Truth fits into that, I’ve decided to take a break from co-hosting the Grace and Truth link-up.  So, the December 25th link party will be my last as a co-host.

I encourage you to follow the other co-hosts! :) Not only can you link up at one of their blogs in the New Year, you’ll benefit from their fantastic content as well.

Not to worry – I’ll still be here blogging as I have time, and still linking with all of you lovely bloggers at Grace and Truth. I value the relationships we’ve been building there.

One of my hopes in taking a step back is to free up more time to focus on writing new content, which you may have noticed has been scarce as of late. ;)

I have plenty of ideas and outlines rattling around in my head, lessons the Lord has been teaching me, but now that I’m working part-time outside of the home finding time to blog is even more of a challenge.  I know many of you are in the same shoes! I greatly appreciate your faithfulness to Being Confident of This and your constant encouragement – it helps to keep me writing.

May God’s presence be evident to you this Christmas season!

Merry Christmas,

Jen :)

Beholding Christ ~ Grace and Truth

Lately I’ve been reading in Romans about how creation groans in anticipation of Christ’s second coming, how we who are in Christ also anticipate this glorious event also – the redemption of our earthly bodies.

It was the same for those who waited thousands of years ago for the Messiah. Little did they know he would arrive as a mere Babe.

Yet they waited then…and we wait now. We count down the days until Christmas, some of us for presents and celebrations, but for some of us so much more than that.  We wait for the day that we celebrate His birth, the arrival of a thousands year old Promise, the arrival of our Peace.

It’s as if the coming joy is nearly tangible in the air. Can you feel it? Or am I just crazy? :)

As we wait expectantly, Betsy reminds us to “behold Jesus,” to expect Him, to listen carefully for the Father’s voice.  Otherwise we might miss the message!

As you make your Christmas preparations in the coming weeks,

Leave room for Christ.

Jen :)

When the Father Prunes~ Grace and Truth Week 44

I’m sure you’ve experienced it before, and perhaps you find yourself smack in the midst of it now – a season of pruning.

The purpose of pruning is to cut dead branches off or sometimes even to remove living ones in order to encourage more fruit-bearing in the following season.

And anyone who has been pruned before knows that the cutting off is painful, sometimes exceedingly painful, yet there is purpose in that pain, friends!

So when the pruning shears come out, perhaps we should willingly submit ourselves to the Master Gardener instead of trying to avoid His work at all costs.  How much easier would it go for us if we appreciated the pruning for what it is?

The pruning is a gift really, is it not? The chance to be more.

The pain of pruning is worth the final product!

Haley from the Long Way to Go shared a beautiful perspective on pruning with us in the link-up last week.

“God showed me that there is color in a season of pruning.”

Look for the product, friends.

Jen :)

Beware the Influence ~ Grace and Truth Week 40

A few years back when our twins were little, my husband worked a second-shift job. So, I was often alone in the evenings, getting supper, helping with homework, and getting everyone safely tucked into bed.

Once the hard work was finished for the evening, I often sat in front of the tv to relax for a bit.  We are careful what we watch in our home due to the influence of the world in so much of our media, or so I thought, and we usually stuck to relatively “innocent” tv programs.

But one night, as I watched Everybody Loves Raymond, I recognized a not-so-innocent subtext that I had never noticed before. The subtext portrayed men as idiots that we just put up with because we can’t help but love them, and women as the superheros of the family unit.

The problem with that subtext is that it was in some ways, relatively subtle, and without realizing it, I had begun to believe it was true!  What a destructive thought pattern for women of faith who are to respect and love their husbands.

Believe it or not, I actually had to take an extended break from the show in order to get my heart towards my husband back to the right spot.

All too often, modern media influences our thinking without us even being aware. And before we know it, our attitudes are far from Christ-like, and much more world-like.

That’s why Kristin’s post from last week is so important.  Kristin writes at Biblical Wives Book Club, and while many bloggers write about the potential downfalls of television and movies with worldly themes, we sometimes forget about the influence that our beloved books can have on us, as well.

Stop by and read Kristin’s post because the implications reach much further than just romance novels and into every area of our lives!

Let’s throw off the influences that damage, and instead

think on the things that are noble.

Jen :)

First World Christians ~ Grace and Truth Week 38

Another week has gone by already, time slipping through our fingers without catching our notice.

What are we doing with our time?

And what are we doing with our privilege?

Kelsey from The Unabashed Life asks this question. Her thought-provoking post made me simultaneously thankful and ashamed: thankful for the gift of privilege and ashamed for not always being a good steward of that privilege.

Thank you, Kelsey, for the timely reminder that to whom much is given, much will be required.  May we seek His face even more diligently!

One of our greatest privileges is the knowledge of the gospel, friends. And lately my heart is so burdened for the lost and the wounded – those around the world who have never heard the name of Jesus and those right down my street who aren’t in relationship with Him either.

Let’s spread our treasure around, friends.  That’s what we’re meant to do with it, after all.

Let’s remember those brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering in ways we cannot even imagine, too.

Above all, let’s cling to Hope and quit striving in our own strength.

Because He’s worthy!

Jen :)

Whatever You Do ~ Grace and Truth Week 36

We’ve all heard the verse before, the one that tells us “…whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord” (1 Cor. 10:31), but do we really have that mindset day by day? Are we intentionally choosing an attitude of serving the Lord in the midst of both the important moments and the incredibly mundane?

I so often fail to remember that even my most despised house chores are opportunities to worship the one true God and to practice thankfulness for the many blessings He has bestowed.

In fact, if you were at my house, you might find me grumbling about all that needs to be done, about how the four kiddos in the house leave their mess out for me to pick up, how my husband leaves his shoes for me to trip over, how the laundry never, ever, ever gets all the way done.

You may be laughing, but I’m not kidding – these are the complaints that at least register in my head even if I don’t always verbalize them (unfortunately, plenty of them do get verbalized). That’s just the honest, messy truth about me.

I can be a critical complainer.

But it ought not be so, friends.

I’m feeling more than a little convicted about this tendency to downplay the gift of life.

Every moment is a gift, even the ones that try us to the core of our beings.

I’m learning this difficult lesson – to give praise in the everyday and even in the painful moments, too.

Because I want to leave a legacy of putting God first in all things, not just in ministry or in writing, but in ordinary moments of parenting, and housekeeping, and marriage, and friendship, and… the list goes on.

Don’t you want it, too? The kind of legacy that leads others toward Christ rather than away from Him? The legacy that brings glory to a Father who deserves infinitely more glory than we can bring in a lifetime?

Lori of Searching for Moments reminds us of how easily we can get distracted from our legacies by busyness in our lives.  She reminds us of how mundane moments can add up to something extraordinary in the life of another. Stop by and give it a read – it’s worth the time!

Yes, we can leave a legacy of faith even while tackling that dreaded laundry mountain!

I’m not advocating a return to perfectionism, no sir.

I’m advocating a graceful approach to a spirit of worship in all that we do.

Let’s live out our faith even in the small moments.

In whatever we do.

Even laundry.

Jen :)

The Freedom of Asking for Help ~ Grace and Truth Week 32

Are you struggling this week, friends?

Are your loved ones struggling?

These words from Dawn at Journeys in Grace are full of such depth:

“In my need to be, ‘ok’, I missed a vital part of the victory over the cycle of war that has seen generations. I left out the freedom that comes from saying, I need prayer today.”

It’s a “meat and potatoes” kind of meal for the soul!  Be sure to stop by and be filled.

Meet you in the link-up,

Jen :)

Listening for His Voice ~ Grace and Truth Week 31

Hello faithful readers and friends!  It’s our favorite part of the week when we share and find all sorts of encouragement in the Grace and Truth Christian Living link-up. :)

Since I missed sharing a feature last week due to our lovely and relaxing family time away, I thought I’d share two features this week!  (Okay, truthfully I just really liked more than one, haha.)

I found encouraging words that really spoke to our current in-between status as we wait for approval to begin church-planting from Christi over at The Cheerio Trail.  Have you ever thought about learning to recognize the enemy’s pattern of attack in your life so that you can more easily head it off? Love these tips – especially number 2!

You can also follow Christi on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, as well as hear her voice via podcast.

I also really enjoyed this week’s post from Sarah at Abiding in Grace.  Sarah reminded me that the key to waiting is really rather simple. If you want to know, you’ll have to read it yourself. :)

You can also find Sarah on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Thanks to all of you for continuing to share quality Christian Living content with us each week. We appreciate you!

Listen for His voice this week, friends.
